Street Photography; Tricks and tips.

Did you know that taking pictures of/ with the Eiffel tower AT NIGHT without a license is illegal?
Why?

Because the lights that make the tower beautiful at night were installed and copyrighted.
Consequently, it’s okay for you to take pictures of the tower during the day without the lights on and without a license..

But if you do same at night, you’d be guilty of copyright infringement.

Interesting right?
This aspect of photography is simply referred to as Street Photography. And while it might be difficult to define, it is simply photography in public places.
How do you use street photography for commercial purposes in a legally approved manner?

Can you use any location of your choice for street photography?

Well, before you engage in that next session of street photography, you need to bear the following points in mind.
1. Be informed as country laws differ.
In the US you might not necessarily need to obtain permission from people in the public before you take photographs of them.

So, know what obtains in your shoot location.
2. Not every space, structure, object and every item in the public is actually public.

Some have copyright protection or restrictions attached to them or some aspect of them which means that you might need to get a license.

The Eiffel tower, for example.
3. Taking photographs in the public might not trigger civil actions, however, what is done with such photographs may trigger such actions.

You might need a model and/or property release clause if you have to use such photographs for commercial purposes.
A model clause is an agreement that attests to the fact that an individual has given a street photographer the right to use, for commercial purposes, a picture in which he/she appears.

A property release concerns property, vehicles and anything other than human.
If you have to take photographs of a minor, you need to take permission from the legal guardian of such minor.

It's also illegal to use the images of people in false light even if you have a model release.
