I do remember a glorious week in my PhD where I got into work at 8:05 on a Monday and was full of pious work enthusiasm and by 11:15 I sacked it off went and bought red dead redemption and almost didn’t move from in front of my PlayStation until the following Saturday

even my normally totally disengaged Australian housemate with a serious coke habit actually asked me on about Thursday if I was ok and would I mind if he could watch some tv in the living room for a bit

I let him watch whatever he wanted for that evening and as he got up for work on Friday he poked his head round the door at about 8am and said “back at it?” in the most withering way he could muster

and perhaps the most affirming story I got from a more colleague was that during his PhD he had to snap the Civilization III CD in half to stop him playing it

remember kids it counts as a healthy work-life balance if you put a heavy thumb on each side of the scales
