A sombre #OnThisDay 14 September 1852, Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington passed away at Walmer Castle, he was 83 years old. He had likely suffered a series of strokes overnight & his condition deteriorated. He was moved from his bed to a chair where he expired at 3pm.

#OTD
The Duke had been living at Walmer Castle for most of 1851/21 as he found the sea air invigorated his health & he'd take a carriage to Deal or Dover frequently, often accompanied by friends. Between this he worked hard in his many public roles.
He was 83 years old & despite being quite deaf, was thought to be in good health, aside from journeys to visit friends it is thought he took most comfort in his last years from his grandchildren and friends young sons & daughters, always taking time to talk with them.
Kendall was the Duke's faithful Valet and as always entered his room at 6am #OnThisDay to stoke the fire in his room. The Duke didn't stir, but as a servant, he didn't disturb his master. It was only when he reentered shortly after that the Duke asked for help.
The Duke asked Kendall for the local Apothecary rather than the Doctor, probably not realising what was wrong.

A stroke can slightly disorientate or confuse the patient, so a feeling of confusion is not unusual (sadly). The Apothecary came, prescribed a small remedy & left.
When the Apothecary left, Kendall asked the Duke of Wellington if he would like some tea.

"Yes if you please" he confirmed. Unfortunately these would be the last words of the great man.
The Duke of Wellington would get his tea, but wouldn't be able to talk any more.

The Apothecary did return after his breakfast in Deal, Kent. The Duke was unconscious, so a Doctor was sent for, who came at once, with his son.

They tried remidies & poultices, but none worked, the Duke remained unconscious in bed.
The faithful Valet Kendall, suggested that they move the Duke to his favourite chair, a wingback.

Soon after it was thought he wasn't breathing. The Doctor's son held a mirror to his mouth, but no breath showed. Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington had died. #OnThisDay
