📝 Intro:
I started MiA without knowing what to expect. I had heard great things and had been recommended to watch it multiple times. One of the reccuring descriptive for it was its intensity and while I agree, I'd like to delve into the other aspects it got right!
📌 Outline 1/2:
In this immense and seemingly endless pit called the Abyss holds many secrets. Cursed to mankind making it difficult to explore, the deeper one goes into it, the harder it is to survive the return. That is, if they even survive the creatures that dwells in it.
📌 2/2:
A civilization built around the gigantic hole is determined to keep digging at its mysteries, among them is a young girl named Riko who meets a young boy with robotic proprieties named Reg. The duo is set on reaching the bottom of the abyss in search of Riko's mother.
📖 Story 1/4:
MiA is quite a trip I must say! From its variety of characters to the world built around them, it stands out from the rest by how consistent and well established everything is. It's both beautiful and sinister with its eerie atmosphere and suspense at every turn.
📖 2/4:
There's quite a bit of explanation given to us about how the world works before we get to the main events, e.g., what the curse does and how it works. This was done in a captivating way through narration but also through seeing the characters discover it themselves.
📖 3/4:
I liked that the story doesn't only revolve around going deeper into the abyss. We have a few sections of peace, others of sheer horror, all so impossibly well written.
MiA will make you expect the worst, calm you down, and then make you regret sighing in relief!
📖 4/4:
I could feel the importance the author gave to making sure we understood the risks of every decisions that could be made. Decisions that could end in painful suffering and death. I felt concerned and attached to the characters from the quality writing alone!
🌱 Characters & Development 1/5:
Riko and Reg are fantastic characters to begin with. Our little Riko is a very intelligent and knowledgeable girl with a sense for adventure. Although she does act crudely and without thinking ahead, she's reliable even in the worst of situations.
🌱 2/5:
On the other side we have Reg who's in a very strange situation, feeling like a real boy while having robotic properties, he's fast both in mind and action. However, he's very emotional and it impairs his judgement at times. Rika and Reg are incredible characters.
🌱 3/5:
They complete each other both in weakness and strength.

The voice actors' performance was believable and heart-wrenching at times, making it feel so, so real...
If MiA's voice actors don't get to you in some way or another, I don't know what will.
🌱 4/5:
I was astonished about the character development. It obviously won't have the same amount of focus than other genres would have but it's there in its purest form. Reg is a precious pearl of a character and felt very genuine to me despite who/what he is.
🌱 5/5:
The secondary characters are also important to the story and it's something to appreciate. Meeting new characters feel organic and natural instead of forced. The character designing is impressive in its own right, something I want to touch on in the visuals part.
🎬 Direction 1/2:
MiA's direction is one I can praise. The moments of terror and sadness aren't ruined by dumb predictable jokes and I was so thankful for that. I'm aware this could fit in the story section as it is writing but I felt like putting it here.
🎬 2/2:
Some of the decisions made for emphasis or simply how the music fit into each scenes were astounding! The key scenes couldn't have been executed better, I had to pause a few times to calm down on some of the more intense parts!
MiA shows the importance of a good director.
🎨 The Visuals 1/2:
The visuals in this series may look, to put it bluntly, a bit boring at first? But let me reassure you though, you will LOVE everything about the visuals once you watch a couple of episodes. The world building is original and the visuals for it are incredible.
🎨 2/2:
The character designs may be my favorite part. There's a unique touch to characters that make them stand out and solidify their role and personality in the story. They are a real joy to look at to say the least. Emotions on the characters are very realistic as well!
🎶 The Music 1/3:
I give a lot of importance to the music, more specifically background music to set the atmosphere and emotion.
Music can make or break a scene!

Here, electronic/orchestral mix was the move and it was perfection.
The genius to thank for it is Kevin Penkin!
🎶 2/3:
The OST is beautiful, often eerie and always enhances the scene it's inserted in.

My favorite piece is 'Hanezeve Caradhina'. This is a perfect song for the series; grand, eerie, beautiful melody and vocals. Chaotic and emotional, it hit all the right targets.
🎶 3/3:
There's also a version of 'Underground River' that just hit me so hard. The atmosphere of this one paired with dissonant chords and an orchestra section gave me chills.

These are just examples but there's so many more, even the lowkey ones give the series justice.
💬 The Rating:
So I have to give credit where it's due: Made in Abyss is excellent.
Because of it's incredible world building, intense writing, beautiful art style, perfect music and voice actors of high caliber, I think it's only fair to give this anime a 9.5/10
I'd also like to point out that the movie sequel is playing in Virtual Cinema Screenings starting on September 18, for more information, visit @SentaiFilmworks!

I am incredibly excited to watch it myself and I hope this review will spark an interest to watch it for some of you!
That's it for this review! 💜
