Delighted to find these clips: the coronation of Ras Tafari as Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia. The coronation took place on 2 Nov. 1930.

Tafari's predecessor was Zewditu, Empress of Ethiopia betwn 1916 and 1930. In her own time she was said to be 'conservative', opposed 1/

to Tafari's military & social innovations. She died on 2 Ap. 1930, after Tafari's modernised army defeated her husband on the battlefield.

Tafari's coronation was said to have cost $3 million. Here he is in a vehicle formerly driven by Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany.

And here is the derby that Tafari organised to mark his coronation.

As emperor, Haile Selassie was keen to cultivate ties with the United States, counterbalancing the power of Britain & Italy. Here he is greeting US President Herbert Hoover around the time of his coronation.

Older forms of power--assembly, the demonstration of valour--were likewise part of the coronation ceremony. Here the regional rulers of Ethiopia enact their allegiance to the newly-crowned emperor.

International press coverage of the coronation was glowing. It was front-page news on a great many local newspapers in the United States. Here are some samples.

The Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester, NY called it the 'most colorful spectacle of modern times'.
