sometimes when I comment on cottagecore or on my own life as a low income rural person there’ll be city/suburban folk in my mentions upset with me for disturbing their fantasy which is funny but also frustrating
simultaneously these people also paint the folk living in those environments with cruel classist stereotypes - idealizing a life in a pasture while in the same breath spitting on the struggling people who already live there
yuppies have a lot of internet and media access and create this narrative where the city is a great beacon of progress, tolerance, and love and the countryside one of persecution, hate, and lacking in any type of diversity
I know this is a big rambling thing but tbh when I moved to the city for a few months I expected to be met with? More? I had heard that I, as a poor person in the lgbt *community*, would finally find my place - only to get there and be just as isolated
There’s something disappointing about hearing how great academic and city environments will be since sure living in the country will result in my torture and death-
-only to hear yuppies make fun of my accent, dress, gap in pop culture knowledge and upper class experiences and on a sadder level to hear overtly cruel jabs at rural poverty, abuse, and addiction
The salt in the wound was for those same people to talk about their dream of living up a mountain somewhere, and no matter how softly I gave my input trying to flesh out their fantasies they’d stop talking to me or confront me about it
tw death, drugs

it just stings tbh to have had to struggle and to watch my hometown friends have children or to become addicted or even OD incredibly young while yuppies kick down at us and also make no room for us in their fantasies of a somehow simpler life outdoors
also just as an add on but hate is an insidious and ever present being in all regions and classes and white gentrifiers pinning it all on ‘rednecks’ and pretending like it doesn’t exist in their neighborhoods because they got window signs is ugly
The grammar of this stumbles p hard in some places but hopefully y’all get what I mean :,)
