there’s an Australian tiktoker who has started to use Auslan (actually signed English with Auslan signs) and signs songs but she is signing them wrong and doesn’t add captions.
She signed nightstand as “night” “stand” and obviously those signs are literal so I was like why is the night standing? Are you standing in the night? “Night” “stand” keeps me up at night I -
Sometimes hearing people say they didn’t know it was problematic. They’re all problematic if appropriating our culture but if they don’t add captions, they’re not doing it for our access or to be “inclusive” as they claim. Especially when they can’t frickin sign correctly
Not all deaf people know sign language. Not all sign language users known Auslan. Not all signing Deaf people are fluent.
She signs some things completely wrong. These people are never open to criticism or feedback from the community. They are offended you’d even consider politely telling them why it’s wrong. They vilify us for being uncomfortable with others profiting off of something we need yet
Many do not have access to. They say they’re trying to help us, but if that’s the case, why would they attack us when we point out that things aren’t working for us
Also have a look at the comments from hearing people on videos of Deaf people signing songs. It’s so ignorant. They’re accused of faking it because how do they know the timing of the song???!?? or called slurs. so yeah we see u obsessed over the hearing person signing a song
For helping “the poor Deaf community” whilst simultaneously hurting the Deaf community
Also there’s a hearing Australian tiktoker who uploaded a video of her teaching Auslan signs SHE JUST LEARNED with no captions. And she obviously taught the wrong signs.
Also a theme when I ask people to transcribe or add captions from tiktok to ig stories is them responding “I know i forgot this time!” Bitch you’ve apparently forgotten every time. I’ve literally never seen you write captions
Just so y’all know an appropriate response is “sorry about that! Here’s a captioned version/a transcription. I’ll make an effort to do it in the future. [any questions about adding CC]”
