1/ There have been a lot of conversations around #hatecrimes and #hatecrime data of late – we’ve been working on this for quite a while – let’s break it down.

See in depth analysis from @AAIUSA: https://bit.ly/3mkZZWX  https://twitter.com/paulkrugman/status/1305234617952337929
2/ The FBI data is notoriously low – Beyond some individuals and communities not being comfortable reporting an incident to law enforcement, only a small percentage of law enforcement agencies actually report hate crime data up to the FBI. #HateCrime
4/ Furthermore, for the #hatecrimes that do get reported to the FBI - certain categories, including Anti-Arab and Anti-Sikh hate crimes, were not documented as such until 2015.

(Thanks to the hard work of civil rights + community orgs, + the advocacy of hate crime victims.)
5/ Despite the significant undercount, federal hate crime data shows trends.

In the wake of 9/11, hate crimes targeting Arabs, Muslims, and those perceived to be Arab or Muslim - particularly Sikh men – surged.
6/ The first reported post-9/11 hate crime murder took the life of Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Sikh man who was helping a landscaper plant flowers outside of his gas station in Mesa, Arizona when he was shot and killed.
7/ In 2001, the FBI reported 481 anti-Muslim hate crimes.

Since the Trump presidency, there has been an upward trend, w/a high of 307 reported anti-Muslim hate crimes in 2016 -- The highest since 9/11.
8/ 2018 was the deadliest year on record for hate crimes & the most violent since the 9/11-backlash.

Ever since the FBI has published HC data - the highest number of race-motivated HC have been anti-Black, & the highest number of religion-motivated HC have been anti-Jewish.
9/ The data points are more than just numbers - they represent individuals affected by hate, families that have lost loved ones, and communities that have been devastated.
11/ Given the problem of underreporting - the House of Representatives recently passed the #JabaraHeyerNOHATEACT to improve hate crime reporting and data collection.
12/ Instead of minimizing the very real surge in anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hate crimes post-9/11, we hope everyone takes a moment to acknowledge that #hatehurts, & ask your Senator to support the #JabaraHeyerNoHateAct to improve hate crime reporting. https://bit.ly/2ZuaYn5
