i saw what happened between lucas and baekhyun so i decided to share my opinions on it! i’m not justifying fat shaming / or comments made about weight but i feel like lucas didn’t get to express what he wanted to say originally.

i lived in the same place as lucas and i also know korean, and i translate chi/eng and kor/eng. so therefore i know cantonese and chinese in general (language lucas thinks in) korean (language the comment was made in) and english (the translation that got people unhappy)

in cantonese, especially among close people eg. your friends and family, people joke around with the word 肥 which directly translates to fat, however this is not fat shaming but just an endearing way to call one another. same goes for 豬 which means pig.

previous examples include how louis is called 肥仔 (directly translates to fat boy but is just an endearing term) and how xiaojun calls fans 傻豬豬 (dumb pig, but it’s a very cute endearing term)

i believe lucas was insensitive for making this comment and at the same time not aware of how this comment would appeal to others in another language (korean, then translated to english)

also, i believe that it is important to educate him on how his comments might be insensitive (especially in another language) but i think it is not necessary to say death threats

i just realized this but in the youtube vid the english translations are “as heavy as a pig” but the actual korean words 몸무게 돼지 means weight: pig

i just wanna day i’m not justifying fatphobia but you have to know the context and understand the connotations based on how the word is used...
it’s like the difference between “youre a bitch” and “you’re a bad bitch”

sigh so many people are doing selective reading here
1. i never said it was ok i literally said he was insensitive and i’m not justifying fatphobia
2. some words can have multiple meanings and everything depends on context. in this case it was not said with malicious intent

but still comes off as insensitive
3. they are adults and they will handle problems maturely
4. there were no controversies on korean and chinese forums, and the clip was edited by the sm team themselves, so they released it thinking it was unproblematic

5. in exact korean wordings, he never said “as heavy as a pig” he said “weight: pig”
