Emo Thread Time: Streets of Rage is a series that holds a huge amount of sentimental value to me. SOR 2 is in my top 10 games of all time but it’s a series that also reminds me of growing up and playing video games with my Dad.
I pretty much got into games through my Dad’s C64, watching him play stuff like The Last Ninja 2 and then playing stuff like Chase HQ, Myth, Turrican and RoboCop myself. But it was years later when we got the Sega Mega Drive
and rented the first Streets of Rage out of the local video rental store where gaming really grabbed my attention, I’d never played anything like it before and I think we ended up renting it more than a few times.
Streets of Rage 2 was the first game I remember being truly excited for release, it’s probably one of my earliest memories when I got it for my birthday. It took everything that was cool and fun about the first game and just turned everything up to eleven
And that score by Yuzo Koshiro is legendary, I’ll never forget the opening bars of the first level.
So I was practically over the moon when @limitedrungames announced the Classic Edition in a Sega Mega Drive clamshell case with reversible Mega Drive / Genesis artwork. It also comes with a standard case with reversible SOR 4 / Bare Knuckle IV & that killer limited edition steel
For me, when I look at this edition it takes me back to a place filled with happy memories and that feeling alone, this edition is priceless to me.
Couldn’t not grab a copy of the game for my Dad as well who’s actually more thrilled than he appears in the photo, he’s pushing aside a pretty bad case of whiplash to help clean up the streets by repeatedly punching some chumps in the face
It’s also a nice feeling of things coming full circle, I remember getting Streets of Rage 2 for my 8th birthday, now I’m older myself I’m able to give back to the person that gave me my love of video games. I feel very fortunate to have shared a lifelong love of gaming with him.
Thanks to @lizardcube, @Dotemu and @Guard_Crush for making Streets of Rage 4. It’s more than worth the 26 year wait, it’s pretty awesome !
But most of all, thanks to my Dad, this one goes out to you. Thanks for all the great memories and for still coming on new adventures with me all these years later.
TL;DR - I love video games and my Dad.
