To be fair I probably don't know as much on the sub genre back story as Casella, but I do worry there is more to the lesser footing of "hope punk"(or anything like it) (1/?) https://twitter.com/jakecasella/status/1305126820640104450
(2/?) Is it possible the failure to conjure a hope punk wave is a sign that the neoliberal project has just been too successful in brain washing folks . . .
(3/?) . . . Specifically with the sense that it's easier to imagine colonizing and trashing other planets or total apocalypse from which scattered folks survive badly . . .
(4/?) . . . than it is to imagine a scenario where we come together to do the most damage control possible and manage a decent outcome, still with interesting tech.
(5/?) I say this as someone who has sought out lots of SFF labeled as more "hopeful" only to find a lot of the "hopeful" stuff to be really depressing to me.
(6/?) To be fair I've been reading a lit of Naomi Klein this year, that's more context for this thread. I feel of she can find space for hope in her non fiction writing, can't we support a body of fiction which holds similar hope?
(7/?) Or has our generational trauma with slash and burn Capitalism finally made even distant hope a dead end? Sigh.
