When I lived in #Ethiopia only 5 years ago, I had Addis Ababans tell me that I don’t “really” look “Ethiopian” but Somali—erasing the fact that Somalis too call parts of Ethiopia home. When I talk to other African friends, I realize how little they understand about how racialized the category of ‘Ethiopianess” really is—how we have entire segments of our population that are excluded from this category for the most part based simply on looks, culture & language.
Those subjected to racialized discrimination not only internalize but also reproduce it. Less so in this generation by the older generation is steeped in it. I’m constantly fighting with my own mother about some of the jokes and language she uses that are seriously discriminatory
