Robert Simpson’s 6th Symphony was dedicated to the gynaecologist Ian. Craft. Commissioned by @LPOrchestra it was premiered by them & Charles Groves in 1980. Craft had suggested that the emergence of life from a fertilized cell could be paralleled in symphonic form.
Ruth Gipps’ 4th Symphony is dedicated to Sir Arthur Bliss. Gipps had performed a number of Bliss’ works with London Repertoire Orchestra. Gipps conducted the premiere at the Royal Festival Hall In 1973. It was later bcast in @BBCRadio3 by @BBCSSO & Sir John Pritchard.
William Mathias’ 2nd Symphony is subtitled ‘Summer Music’. It’s in 3 movements & was premiered by @liverpoolphil & Vernon Handley in May 1983. It’s recorded on @NimbusRecords by @BBCNOW conducted by the composer. @mathiasland
The 35’ 2nd Symphony of @DMatthewsSymph dates from 1979 but some material dates from a discarded choral work of 1970. The Epilogue references church bells heard in Oxford where it Mas mostly written. Premiere was given by @SimonRattle & @philharmonia at @StJohnsSmithSq in 1982.
Looks like it’s going to be pretty tight today. 3 of these are almost neck and neck. Remember only 2 will be going through. Voting’s open until 8pm.
