I was there! I had quite the day too. I think I led onto pit road on the last stop but had an issue on the right rear and came off pit road way down in the order. Lucky for me all the lead lap cars got to go to the front of the line and there were only 6 of us. https://twitter.com/pLmotorsport/status/1305179748167942145">https://twitter.com/pLmotorsp...
We went green with 4 to go. I got through P5 ( @frankkimmel on really old tires) and P4 ( @TimGeorgeJr) pretty quickly. I caught @jlracing who was running P3 as we came to the white. Now here& #39;s where it gets interesting.
Justin& #39;s crew chief came over to @KevinBucklerCEO on our pit box and told him that they were running for a championship and to please respect that. What he meant was please don& #39;t pass us.
What Kevin told me was, "They don& #39;t want to risk the championship and are going to let you by." Completely the opposite of what they meant. I passed Justin casually and safely on the inside of turn 5. Imagine my surprise when he gave me the over under and ran me off in the dirt
and ripped off the right side of my car in the process! @AndyLally was my spotter at the time and told me go get him! Coming into the Jersey Devil on the way to the checker Lally was yelling, "Hit him back! Hit him back!"
Given that we don& #39;t really do a lot of intentional banging in sportscar, this was not something I had a lot of experience with. I may have overestimated how hard I needed to hit him to move him out of the way. I ended up sending him spinning way off the track and into the weeds.
I figured for sure I would get a penalty post race. I mean, that& #39;s what would have happened in @imsa right? On the cool off lap I told Lally that it wasn& #39;t going to stick. I was going to get a time penalty or something. "No Way!" he said, "You just got P3. Go get your trophy."
When I came down pit road, all the guys from Justin& #39;s team where charging at the my car and banging on the hood. I knew I was in a stock car race when my crew chief came over the radio and said, "Hey bud, stay in the car and keep your helmet on until we get there."
If I remember, @pLmotorsport and @pkligerman were also going door to door on the final laps. I had my hands full with Justin but I remember you both in the dirt on drivers left on the way into turn 5 and thinking you both were going to wreck but everyone recovered.
Still one of the most fun races I have ever run in a car that had more horsepower and torque than anything imaginable on a tire that was not great, but drivable for sure. What an awesome day.
