“Wait.. what’s wrong with eating fish?”

Why we shouldn’t eat fish: A Thread
Overfishing
- 90% of the world’s fisheries are either fully exploited or overfished.
The oceans are running out of fish.
Bycatch
So you love dolphins and sharks? Help them out by not eating fish. Due to the practices of fishing we currently use. Animals are unintentionally caught and brought up in the fishing nets. Which contributes to their population depletion
“Save the turtles”
- fishing nets that are left behind have a bigger impact on the turtles than plastic straws. These nets make up 46% of the ocean pollution whereas plastic straws make up...0.03% 😐
Pollution
- Humans use the ocean as a dumping ground for waste. There’s trash, fuel, oil, human fecal matter, dead bodies, and lets not forget the run off from the waste at animal agriculture farms (“livestock”)

So the Ocean is DIRTY
Fish and other sealife area meant to filter the oceans and clear out the pollutants.
And because of ✨overfishing✨👆🏾there aren’t enough fish to go around to clean the massive levels of pollution in the ocean.
Farm Raised and Antibiotic resistance
So you think just raising fish outside of the ocean is the solution? Wrong.

Thousands of fish are packed in small cylinder tanks and since they’re so close, disease is bound to happen. But we don’t want that so what do we do? Antibiotics.
We then ingest those fish and the antibiotics within them which only adds to our problem of antibiotic resistance.
“But wouldn’t the alternative just be sustainable fishing?”

In theory, maybe. But we’ve reached a point where we need to make a drastic change as quickly as possible. And the best way to do that is to back off completely and allow the ocean to recover on its own
And how exactly DO we ensure this “sustainable” fishing at the commercial level? I guarantee you any answer you give that’s not going out and getting it yourself will cost a lot more money than it already does.
“Fish don’t feel pain or have good memory “
If you have a central nervous system you can feel pain 99% of the time. And they have been shown to try and flee pain.
Sea life is much more intelligent than we give them credit for (Take an Octopus for example)
“But people rely on fish to survive”
You’re exactly right. And By eating fish by choice you are contributing to the depletion of their necessity. You have a choice, they do not.
“But what about Omegas? “
- The omegas found in fish are just a concentrated forms of the algae that the fish themselves ate. They’re just the middle man.
Good Plantbased sources of Omegas
- flaxseeds (highest ALA content)
- chia seeds
- hemp seeds (also a complete protein)
- algae based supplement
- various types of seaweed algae (nori, dulse)
