#OnThisDay in 1922, The Straw Hat Riot begins in New York City as people protest the right to wear straw hats beyond the accepted end date of September 15.
It lasted 8 days, leading to arrests and injuries.

"10 or 12 boys armed with sticks dashed out of doorways near 109th Street". 7 of the youths brought to the police station were under 15 and were not arrested; their parents were summoned and the boys "were spanked ignominiously”
Gangs of teenagers prowled the streets wielding large sticks, looking for pedestrians wearing straw hats and beating those who resisted. One man claimed that his hat was taken and the group who had taken it joined a mob of 1,000 that was snatching hats all along Amsterdam Avenue.
When Acting Detective Brundizo had his hat knocked off, he chased the kid but was interrupted by policeman Sigmund Cohn. Brundizo then arrested Cohn for "interfering with an officer in the discharge of his duty".
Maybe I shouldn’t, but I’m laughing so hard.
