Thread incoming... This set was posted to me for storing in the @gia_tweet archive, it is a portfolio of early prints depicting Glasgow that was acquired at @Sothebys in 1968. Most prints look familiar from historic journals such as the Building News, but I’ll share nonetheless!
First up is a series of portraits, including Walter MacFarlane of the Saracen Foundry, William Young who designed the city chambers, John Gordon who is a former GIA pres, and Campbell Douglas interestingly noted as architect of the St Andrews Halls (by his partner James Sellars)
Also in amongst the portraits was John Burnet, the fabulously named Scottish painter Horatio McCulloch, alongside the classical scholar and education reformer John Stuart Blackie.
Now onto the first of the buildings, Glasgow Cathedral from drawings produced by Alexander McGibbon in 1893...
Next up, a set of Kelvingrove by John Simpson and EJ Milner Allen from 1892...
... including this great perspective!
Now to the City Chambers!
After that it moves on to a fairly random assortment of buildings inc the new conservative club, Robert Adam’s royal infirmary, the Whiteinch orphanage for girls, and Gardner’s Warehouse...
Inc a couple of Cathedral Court by Burnet, Son and Campbell - these made me chuckle as they reminded me that Monty Python has ruined the word shrubbery for me... “we want... a shrubbery!”
Also in there was JJ Burnet’s Atheneum (now the Hard Rock Cafe), Redhall at Kelvinside by TL Watson (now demolished), Honeyman and Keppie’s Kelvingrove design, and David Hamilton’s Western Club (now the Apple Store)
An odd inclusion was a few newspaper clippings of the collapse of the City of Glasgow bank and an agricultural show at Glasgow Green...
... and an article on a fire at the R Wylie Hill and Co warehouse on Buchanan St
Now for the last couple of posts we have some photos showing various views of the city - George Sq (pre-extension of the Merchants House), Buchanan St, Royal Exchange Sq and Glasgow Uni (pre-openwork spire)
This set shows Greenock’s Custom House Quay, Thomas Telford’s bridge heading toward Jamaica St, Kelvingrove Park and George Square...
... and these final ones show Kelvingrove, a view towards Kelvinbridge(?) and a rather random illustration of the opening of the Garnkirk Railway. If anyone else fancies sending us lots of lovely old things in the post, please do!
