Hitler’s rise (with 33% support):

- German right "forsook true conservatism"

- officials thought they could “tame” Hitler but were eventually fired

- people thought Hitler too "mediocre" to be a dictator

- Germans who opposed Nazism failed to unite against it

We cannot fail.
Nazis engineered an event—the Reichstag Fire, where the Parliament building was burned—to pass emergency laws to “protect citizens” and arrest people they characterized as dangerous opponents.

Modern Right-wing groups are pretending to be Antifa and stirring up violence now.
The times are different. I’m not saying we are at this point, or trying to fear-monger. I know 2020 is scary enough as it is.

But the Germans certainly didn’t know when *they* crossed this point either. These patterns shouldn’t be ignored.
Any leader advocating breaking an election into pieces by telling citizens to vote twice; ordering his Attorney General to prosecute his opponents; to break every rule and norm to win and perpetuate a violent strife between countrymen warrants a careful look.
Anyone thinking I am being hyperbolic: this is the President’s longtime advisor whose sentence he commuted advocating publicly for the immediate imprisonment of Trump’s opponents and a seizure of the ballots on Election Day. Stone is a kook, but Hitler was “mediocre” too. https://twitter.com/ronbrownstein/status/1304883373177856001
final point: I doubt Trump sat down and read Hitler’s or Mussolini’s strategy and thought “this is what I will do!” more likely that it is the *nature* of the man that dictates this pattern of behavior; not a conscious decision to be fascist, but an urge to dominate everything.
Final final point: some comments abt family members saying Trump had Hitler’s speeches on his bedside table... that’s the kind of mythos fascists create. Trump does not read. He said Thailand “thighland.” You think he’s leafing through 1930’s Hitler speeches at night? Come on.
