Happy Saturday! ✨ I want to take some time to highlight fat creators and activists whose work has inspired my own and with whom I’m very lucky to be in community and solidarity. Thread below. 💛
IMO, @MerQueenJude has carved one of the safest and most educational fat-positive spaces on the Internet. They’re a streamer and content creator whose presence in my life has changed me significantly for the better. Please follow Jude!
Anti-fatness is rooted in anti-Blackness, and @DaShaunLH’s work centers around this fact. They’re an incredible writer and an outspoken advocate for whom I’m wildly grateful. Please follow them.
When I started the journey to love myself and advocate for fat liberation, @fatgirlfreedom was one of the first people I followed — and she’s only continued to make me feel valued and seen in the intervening years. Please follow her!
If you’re superfat and seeking resources and community (or if you’re NOT superfat and want to learn how to support those who are), look no further than @comfyfat, whose blog and socials are a constant source of light in this internet hellscape.
The first time I saw a video of @rachielouwho performing, it changed my entire life. Reading or hearing Rachel’s poetry feels a bit like my breath is being stolen and my bones are being imbued with the strength of a goddess all at once.
To be honest, working with @freeblackgirl still feels like a dream. Evette’s work at @bitchmedia — especially her writing about the history of the fat acceptance movement — was and is integral to my own understanding of and advocacy for fat liberation.
Medical fatphobia is so rampant and food talk is often incredibly toxic. @synapse101 is an incredible voice for changing how we nourish our bodies and discuss that nourishment, and I’m so grateful for her work.
This thread will be updated throughout the weekend! ✨ Twitter always breaks my long threads if I do them all at once aaaand I have a very intense to-do list, so this will be one of my break activities. 💛
Every single piece @yrfatfriend writes is a must-read and her Twitter feed is home to incredible testimony, discussion and myth-busting around fatness and fat issues. She has a book coming out in November! Please pre-order it.
Every time I have a question about tabletop, monsters, queerness, or the intersection of all three — ESPECIALLY as it relates to body politics and fatness — I ask @cprevas, who's one of the most intelligent, articulate and kind-hearted people I know.
I think @meghantonjes is one of the first fat people I ever saw on the internet who didn't hate herself, and that changed my entire life. Meghan is is a super talented musician and an outspoken advocate whom I adore.
Honestly, the fat acceptance movement wouldn't be where it is right now without @Byagi, who founded @chubstr a full decade ago and continues to be an outspoken advocate for and progenitor of progress and change, especially in fashion.
One of my favorite artists of all time is @jijidraws, whose mixture of cute and macabre is so perfect. Jiji's art makes me smile every time I see it and I'm completely in love with the characters and worlds she paints through her drawings of fat babes doing their thing.
I'm constantly in awe of @TrustMiguel's vulnerability and willingness to open himself up in his writing. He's also a farmworker and a skilled editor whose work is top-tier, especially as he works to uplift other marginalized voices.
Since submitting my piece for @fatandqueer, I've learned so much about @bruceowensgrimm and his writing, which is at turns haunting and so sharp you could prick your finger on it. I'm incredibly grateful for the space he's carving -- for himself and others in the fat community.
OK, back to writing! More to come. ✨
I’m such a huge fan of @negaverse_queer’s art and merch; I wear their fat babe necklace almost every single day and it makes me feel SO empowered and good. They are ridiculously talented and so generous.
Whenever I read something by @amascriver, I learn something new that I then try to share with as many people as possible. Ama is driven, diligent, and dogged, in addition to being totally forthright and vulnerable in a way that astounds me.
Fashion is a major minefield when you’re fat and it’s often really triggering to read fat fashion reporting — but @G_Russo1 is one of the best journalists I know and I’m constantly blown away by the nuance Gianluca brings to the table.
The first time I met @Worstwizard, she greeted me with the warmest hug and immediately made me feel like we’d been friends for years. Sarah is one of my absolute favorite artists and comics colorists and I love her to bits; her work always, ALWAYS makes me feel seen.
Another fashion guru I can’t recommend enough is @MarieDenee, founder of The Curvy Fashionista, which is basically a one-stop site for everything you need to know about fat fashion and shopping, which can be a wildly hard space to navigate.
Fatventure Mag wouldn’t exist without Jenny Bruso, whose @UnlikelyHikers made me feel like I could be an outdoorsy person and still be fat — which is something I’d struggled with since I was a kid growing up in the mountains. I’m constantly grateful for this community.
This will sound over the top, but @vanessapamela is honestly my hero. I admire her writing, her strength, her kindness, and her capacity for love so, so much. I aspire to take Vanessa’s way of being to heart nearly every day, and I’m so grateful to have met her.
Happy Sunday! ✨ More to come!
