This may seem biased coming from me. I nearly think about this every day and each time I am always happily mindblown how despite the large competition he has, Nisio Isin was able to make Araragi such a compelling, relatable, layered, loveable and well written character.
I mean I think the writing just speaks for itself. Araragi's struggle on how he is supposed to live up and be a proper boyfriend for Senjougahara. A semi-heroic rolemodel for his sisters. His encounter with Shinobu and how he has to stay loyal until death.
Showing maturity and seniority to help Kanbaru, having Hachikuji help him with his lack of self-confidence and him learning it is okay to depend on the people around him, to rely on your friends, something he deemed unnecessary and overcame because of Hanekawa.
Then Nisio Isin built upon that flawed mentality of his and wrote Oikura. Someone introduced to explain his characteristics and someone who he can be thankful of for making him realize he IS and SHOULD be grateful to the people around him and who support him no matter what.
Nadeko and Seishirou both serve as characters and walls Araragi can't break through all by himself. He has to rely on Kaiki, someone he cannot stand at all. But he has to learn that he cannot save everyone. People can only save themselves, the exact lesson Oshino always gave him.
It's all of these experiences that we go through together with Araragi while also realizing every other character has their own journey— Their own story. It all comes down together nicely as Isin uses subtle inconsistencies with Ougi's dialogue throughout Owarimonogatari.
Nearly everything Ougi says and stands for is in direct conflict of what Araragi usually does or tries to prevent. His memory loss which turns out to be him purposefully ignoring parts of himself he tries to avoid confronting all gets shot down in Owari's climax.
Yes, Monogatari has a phenomenal variety of female characters that I think it's easy to forget how also great of a character its protagonist is. I personally relate a lot to his experiences and am happy to call him "my mc". And no Araragi, you are cute.
