Since @paulkrugman disastrously naive take on what life was like post-9/11 is going around, in this thread I'll catalog just a few things that I can remember happening to me (mostly law-abiding, young Indian Muslim man living in NYC) in the weeks and months after the attacks:
1/n
NYPD & FBI showed up at my west village apartment w/ a list of everything delivered to the address and asked me questions like: "Do you know anyone who was celebrating the night of 9/11?"

2/n
FBI and local PD questioned my parents at our house in Kansas and asked to see proof of me having grown up there

3/n
Group of NYC firefighters threatened to "smear my brains across the pavement" outside an upper west side pub

Still can't take firefighter worship in this country seriously

4/n
Subway was stopped and boarded by NYPD who briefly detained me for "matching a description"

5/n
Old white lady spied on my phone call at LaGuardia airport and pointed me out to boarding gate agent (who thankfully let it slide)

6/n
Briefly taken off a (different) flight and questioned by some sort of federal agents on the jet bridge - pilot had to come out and approve if he was comfortable with me flying

7/n
I've seen the holding area of JFK, Miami, Atlanta & Houston airports b/c well you know

8/n
I've been purposefully hip checked by innumerable young white dudes - a practice that continues to this day

Into this category I'll add: what is it with these dudes and their pickup trucks? I've been swerved into a number of times as well
