Has anyone else that’s gone to art school been belittled for making “cute” art? I’ve never seen anyone talk ab it but I’ve had professors and students tell me to stop making “cute” things bc it can’t be taken seriously. It’s made me feel like I don’t have a place here

One time in a class during Crit I said someone’s piece was cute and they all looked at me like I murdered someone and the professor was like “don’t say that”

One time a classmate did a presentation on William Kentridge and said that animation that’s “cute” and has “no deep meaning about society” is worthless and stupid (AND THEN THE FRONT ROW ALL LOOKED AT ME) and then I went after him and did a presentation on chibi maruko Chan

another professor I had a one on one meeting with about my work from the semester and she told me to stop making stuff that’s cute. I guess to her, “cute” stuff was too commercial and therefore “selling out?” I WANNA WORK ON TV CARTOONS MAAM
