why I think “blond(e) by frank ocean is one of the greatest albums of all time. (this is in my opinion!)
CREATIVITY:
blonde is easily one of the most creative and unique albums i’ve ever heard. from the high pitch vocals, the minimalist production, and the raw emotion, blonde perfectly executes it all. also, the amount of duality in this album is insane.
CONCEPT:
the concept of blonde is pretty deep as it’s mainly about frank’s first love. songs like nikes, ivy, nights, and futura free all have the high pitch vocals representing a younger frank ocean. it’s also a 2 part album, as the first half is called “blonde” (1/3)
which is the feminine term for blonde hair, it creates a more bright environment, but after the beat switch in “nights” the album turns into “blond” the masculine term for blonde hair. on “blond” we see a more darker distorted environment which represents an older frank (2/3)
ocean reminiscing on his past that was established on “blonde” (3/3)
SONGWRITING:
many people can agree that frank ocean is one of the best songwriters of the last decade. on many of the songs we see frank showcase his songwriting skills, he really creates an environment and paints a picture in your mind with each verse on the album (1/2)
i think he also knows how to perfectly make his songs relatable to the listener as we all have most likely found ourselves in similar situations as frank. (2/2)
EXPERIMENTATION:
on “blonde” we see frank step away from his more pop style from his work previous to blonde. he takes a more alternative r&b route, with him singing over more guitar instrumentals, while also spitting a few rap verses on songs such as (1/2)
nights, futura free, and solo. on the songs where there is no guitars he’s usually singing over more distorted, chilling beats. (2/2)
EMOTIONAL DEPTH:
frank ocean perfects emotional depth on “blonde” from pretty much every song off the album he has a great understanding of emotions and how he would cope with them. the best example would probably be seigfried as he really shows us him at his lowest (1/2).
from the slow delivery, the violins, the distorted effect on his voice towards the end, and him explaining how he copes with drugs and crying for losing this person he really loved. (2/2)
STRUCTURE:
blonde is one of the best structured albums ever. every song flows to the next perfectly and each story told in each song is very unique and catches your ear. one of the the strongest albums as a whole i’ve ever listened to.
CONCLUSION:
in conclusion i think blonde is easily one of the BEST albums i’ve ever listened to. with every song fitting the tracklist, with frank’s stories about his failed first love, and with how well he executes the themes of depression, loneliness, drugs, and love. (1/2)
it’s one of the strongest 10s i’ve ever given and easily my 2010s album of the decade. (2/2)
