Why do Republicans tend to do so well among Latinx voters in Florida?
1) Democrats take Latinx votes for granted and never ask for the votes with respect. The GOP spends significantly more money and effort on Spanish language outreach.
2) Latinx voters are not a monolith. Cuban voters, many of whom react strongly to anything wearing a "socialist" label, are a significant component of the Floridian Latinx community.
3) (Again, with emphasis) Latinx voters are not a monolith. Descendants of each parent nationality come from distinct cultural backgrounds, many of which consider themselves superior to others. There is no solidarity and precious little community between them.
4) Many Latinx voters desperately want to be considered as "white" by the Anglo community. This can lead to an exaggerated acting out of behavior seen as typically "white." The more they are rejected by white supremacists for their surnames or accents, the harder they try.
5) Because white Democrats take Latinx voters for granted, they do not come together to support Latinx communities that are in crisis, because their votes are already "in the bag." At rallies for fair treatment for Maria survivors I was one of only two or three Anglos present.
6) Because white Democrats take Latinx voters for granted, they spend little effort listening to the concerns of people in the community rather than parachuting in outside consultants to tell communities what they want. (This was a significant problem for the Warren campaign.)
7) Because white Democrats take Latinx votes for granted, they craft solutions that benefit the mostly white power structure rather than empowering Latinx voices. eg, advocating Puerto Rican statehood rather than a status referendum that includes independence as an option.
8) When Latinx concerns come into conflict with those of white Democrats, white concerns win. For example, the Jones Act as applied to Puerto Rico primarily benefits white (mostly MAGA) voters in Jacksonville. Even supposed allies like @ewarren would not engage on this issue.
9) The dearth of progressive outreach to Latinx voters allows toxic conspiracy theories to flourish in the vacuum.
