#Marijuana in India

History | Mythology | Ayurveda | Post-Modern Laws | विजयाः

A Thread
In recent days we have seen a storm of public opinion about the arrest of #RheaChakraborty.

Many have said this is unfair because of the prevalent rule. But what are the laws and how do we make some sense out of this.

Let us see...
The first mention of Marijuana among the Hindu dharmashastras is found in the Atharva Veda

पञ्च राज्यानि वीरुधां सोमश्रेष्ठानि ब्रूमः।
दर्भो भङ्गो यवः सह ते नो मुञ्चन्त्व् अंहसः॥

The word ‘भङ्ग’ (bhang) here refers to the cannabis plant.
Cannabis was among the 5 most important herbs known in Ayurveda. There are 45 names which are given to Marijuana, one of them being विजया:

The treatment of Tuberculosis, Leprosy and many other diseases are especially based on the Marijuana plant.
You may have heard about the dual between Devas and Asuras during "समुद्र मंथन" in the Shiva Purana

Accr to the प्रसंग when Humans asked for their share of the अमृत, it was said that the Amrit was too potent for humanity but the last drop of the Amrit was used to grow Marijuana
Raphael Mechoulam, An Israeli scientist who is called the father of cannabis research dedicated the first chapter of his research to Cannabis in India

He mentions about Dr. Russell Reynolds who used to get Cannabis from India. Interestingly, he had only 1 client, Queen Victoria
The first documented research about use of Ganja in Modern India was the Indian Hemp drugs Commission report 1893

The commission submitted a 3000+ pages report and advised the government against Banning Ganja as it was an ancient custom and Indigenous to this land.
When India got independence in 1947, the Consumption of Marijuana was legal.

It was made illegal in 1985 by the Rajiv Gandhi Government by the introduction of NDPS(Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act), 1985.

There was just one problem with this Law.
This Act was implemented in India because of pressure from the United States of America as a initiative to make India join the world order as War on Drugs was at its peak.

Since then 40 countries has legalised marijuana including 33 states in the USA.
There are parts of the NDPS Act which transcends common sense.

According to Section 2 The leaf and seeds of the marijuana plant is not banned but Section 20 says that the cultivation of the entire plant is a crime.

Bhang holds religious significance and is legal in many states
Am I saying that there are no harmful effects?
No.That needs proper research

A Knife in the hands of a common man makes his life easy
In the hands of a surgeon save lives
In the hands of a thief is a weapon

Is the answer to stopping the thief banning the knife?
I don't think so
Ganja has been consumed by the people of this land for atleast the last 3000 years. It has only been illegal for the last 35 years by a law which was not backed by medical science but by geopolitics and inferiority complex.

I support legalisation of Marijuana and if you think..
That it is an immoral stand, then I simply don't care

Homosexuality was illegal 2 years ago
Female Foeticide was not just legal but part of population control

And yet we have very different societal views about them today. There is a vast difference between Hemp and hard drugs
What about the moral question here?

Well accr to me if you

1) Understand the difference between Hedonism and Escapism
2) Recognise that there are realities which you need to deal with.

Your life is your choice. There is a very distinct line here, it's called being an adult
Do you support #Rhea getting arrested?

1. I have no sympathies for that women
2. The conduct of media has been disgusting
3. The Mumbai Police investigation looks doubtful
4. The death of SSR was tragic and it deserves a fair investigation

All 4 can be true
I simply don't care.
