A brief word for the unintiated: Do you know how long the GOP has been baking disenfranchisement into the system? Let's start with the ULTRA-OBVIOUS stuff, shall we: in 2013, the section requiring DOJ preclearance for any changes to Voting processes in 6 states that had been https://twitter.com/so_treu/status/1303517080558481410
Big Problems during Jim Crow and pre-VRA, was overturned by SCOTUS. Within 24 hours, all 6 had introduced new legislation restricting voting rights.
But wait, the first voter id laws requiring govt issued photo id at the polls, that goes back to 2006.
Did you know that Kansas tried to require a US passport as proof of citizenship? That Alabama closed down ALL of the DMV offices in its "Black Belt," that most states won't recognize student ID's as valid forms of ID because they don't expire. That the number of eligible voters
Who DON'T have a govt issued photo id is around 20% and that's about 5 Million people. That is an election.
STOP FUCKIN SAYING, "JUST VOTE," LIKE THE SYSTEM ISN'T BEING RIGGED.
We're not even getting into carceral disenfranchisement and the fact that prisoners are counted for the purpose of redistricting, in the district in which they are imprisoned. I have worked adjacent to this shit for over a decade, and I will go off.
So, the answer to this Q: is, yes. And in fact, due to lawsuits, many states that instituted voter ID had to provide them for free. HOWEVER, then we run into the economic disenfranchisement. https://twitter.com/thegettygirl/status/1303572094727475201?s=20
Because the documents required to prove identity/citizenship, if you don't already have them (birth certificate, for ex.) COST MONEY. Transportation, time off work, cost money. And while some states do have to pay you for a number of hours if you take time off to VOTE, they don't
have to pay you for the time spent making sure you CAN vote. And that's where we get into the sneaky bullshit: closing down polling places, sending old, broken machines to areas they don't want voting, this is how we end up with lines for hours on election day.
I could truly spend hours detailing all of the absolutely disgusting efforts at disenfranchisement without even going into the hanging chads, but let's jump to that anyway, since the outcome is likely to be relevant in 2020. The Supreme court handed over a presidency. When the
electoral college math would have been charged by counting every single vote, a conservative SCOTUS decided to stop counting votes. Let's see, I wonder how that might be applicable NOW, with mail ballots. What do you think? There are legal requirements for when the EC has to
Meet and certify. I wonder if mail delays and slow counting in GOP held states might lead to Trump going all the way to the supreme court to demand a ruling. And there's PRECEDENT, because of the hanging chads. Twenty years of disenfranchisement as political praxis.
But America only gives a shit now that White people are the ones being disenfranchised en masse in a pandemic.
