Want to hear the preeminent bebop trombonist J.J. Johnson on Spotify? Make sure to include periods after the letter J, or the streaming platform will tell you he doesn't exist. Even the most incompetent record store owner kept better track of artists and albums.
Another tip: If you search for "Tony Bennett and Bill Evans" you will find that Spotify has none of their albums listed. But if you search for "Tony Bennett & Bill Evans" their albums will show up in the results. They could fix these bugs, but they really don't care about music.
And don't even try to do a Spotify search on specific musicians whose name isn't part of the band's name. John Lewis might have been music director for the Modern Jazz Quartet for most of his life, but the folks at Spotify are blissfully unaware of this connection.
If you do a search for "Jazz Music" on Spotify, it will only list albums with the words "jazz" and "music" in the album title. Just imagine how people abuse this for search result placement—and, in fact, that's exactly what's happening (with many $ taken from more legit artists).
The sad truth is that a jazz musician hoping to maximize Spotify royalties just needs to release an album called "Jazz Music for Background, Coffee, Dinner, Retail and Office" by "John Smith, Mary Adams and Bill Johnson"—it doesn't matter what the music sounds like.
Another blooper from the never-ending travesty of Spotify's streaming platform. I guess you can upload classic jazz tracks and give credit to anyone you like (maybe even yourself).
