More than 1.4 million Illinois voters have applied for vote-by-mail ballots as of today. That's 17.4% of all active voters. https://www.elections.il.gov/VotingAndRegistrationSystems/PreElectionCounts.aspx?MID=l0hlXuSrKL0%3d&T=637351682362651571
Put another way: Presidential election turnout in IL averaged 73% from 1976-2016. If we meet that average this year, 1.4 million votes by mail would be nearly 24% of the total
Here's a look at the highest to lowest presidential election turnout figures from 1976-2016. If this year sees turnout dip to 1996 levels, we're already over 26% of ballots that would be cast by mail.
And it's still early in the vote-by-mail application timeline. Ballots will be sent beginning Sept. 24. If you're concerned about COVID exposure through in-person voting, voting by mail is your answer.
