Thread: Today, a new HUD rule that unravels federal #housing anti-discrimination efforts goes into effect. Here’s why that’s damaging to millions 👇
With this rule, ongoing housing discrimination & segregation will likely continue to be swept under the rug & HUD resources will do far less to reduce segregation & expand housing opportunities for people of color, people with disabilities, and other protected groups.
The Trump admin is bypassing HUD’s rulemaking procedures by finalizing the rule without taking into consideration the *nearly 20,000* public comments submitted earlier this year by communities, experts, & members of the general public.
Let’s not forget that we are in the middle of a pandemic that is showing us the heavy price communities of color pay for lawmakers’ failures. Higher rates of infection, death, & job loss among Black, Latinx, & Native people are impacts of centuries of unequal opportunities.
This move to tear down the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing obligation of the Fair Housing Act is only the latest action the Trump admin has taken to undermine #FairHousing.
Last Friday, the Trump Admin released a disparate impact rule that will overwhelmingly tip the scales in favor of landlords in #DisparateImpact fair housing cases, letting them keep policies in place that prevent people from accessing fair housing. https://www.hud.gov/sites/dfiles/ENF/documents/6111-F-03%20Disparate%20Impact%20Final%20Rule%209-3-20%20FOR%20POSTING.pdf
The Trump Admin has proposed other policy changes that would undermine #fairhousing. For instance, HUD’s proposed mixed status rule would take assistance away from certain families that include immigrants which would overwhelmingly harm Latinx families. https://bit.ly/2ScKy5B
Instead of moving the nation forward toward equity, the Trump admin is consistently reinforcing our racist and discriminatory past.
