I believe in Pan Africanism because I have been blessed to live that life personally and professionally: adopted family from Trinidad, business in Kampala & Johannesburg, friendships & professional relationships with Black British actors, business associates in Nairobi. #ADOS
Pan Africanism is an aspirational idea that is no where near realization in its full conceit, culturally, politically, or economically. Actualized, it would be one of the world’s great forces. I agree most Black Americans don’t feel connected to the idea. No significance #ADOS
Self determination is for more important for Black Americans than some utopia of Pan Africanism. That’s logical. I believe in that. Also Pan Africanism accepts that people are different from other countries and don’t share my American experience. And there will be conflict. #ADOS
But for the #ADOS movement to adopt the age old stereotype of Black immigrant conflict between the American,Caribbean, & African is puerile and reductive. Immigrants who embrace it are ignorant as well. An old divisive practice promoted by those who seek to oppress our community
Why embrace a practice of Black xenophobia that experience tells us is self destructive? Are we going to bring back the “brown paper bag test”? Should we subscribe to the “talented tenth” philosophy? I would hope not. #ADOS
Exercise your right of self determination. The Social Justice Movement of the 21st Century is Economic Development. You are free thinkers. Fight for reparations. We may not agree politically, but give up this disdain for the African diaspora.
