A lot of people hate on sugar in nutrition. Not all sugars are made the same tho. Fructose or the sugar we find in fruits is a monosaccharide, meaning it is made of single sugar molecules. Sugar from cane is made of disaccharides, a double sugar molecules.
Polysaccharides are huge chains of sugar molecules this is what we find in "complex carbs" and most starches.
So the basic of it is single sugar molecules our body breaks down easily, double molecules are more difficult, poly or more than two bonded sugar molecules are the most difficult to digest.
Sugar isn't your enemy, it is just misunderstood. Today I learned that red blood cells, don't have a mitochondria. "The powerhouse of the cell" for energy they actually rely on glucose (a simple sugar/monosaccharide/carb) to do their business.
And the business of red blood cells is to circulate throughout the body, moving CO2 to the lungs and Oxygen + nutrition to other cells. If it had mitochondria it would also consume oxygen+nutrition and create CO2 kind of like your postmates driver eating your fries.
I'm sure my HS biology teacher is annoyed I'm saying today I learned that about RBC but hey I forget stuff I'm only human.
So sugar is not your enemy. Sugar isn't making you fat. Fatness is a sensitive topic, so many of us have experienced being overweight and the shame that comes with it. Or still are. Unfortunately there is a lot of money in telling people how to lose fat.
So a lot of random made up shit gets peddled to the public. It is hard to weed through it all and find out what's true are not.
Weight gain, or difficulty losing weight has a lot of factors, net gain or loss of calories is an enormous factor but it doesnt take into account your hormones, for just one example, so it isn't always the end all solution people look for it to be.
My focus, while studying isn't necessarily on weight but on overall intestinal health. But a lot of nutritional information overlaps.
I think eating the right kind of carbs for your body is way more important then focusing on a low carb diet. I don't eat grains, it's in my bio but I'm not a low carb diet. Depending on the day my diet is probably 65-80% carbs.
Ik this scares some people, especially Americans where we are constantly told we need to consume enough protein to block out the sun. The truth is the average american doesn't need as much protein as they have been led to believe.
I am getting off track tho. Don't trust all nutritional information you here. Don't even trust me, do your own research.
To get back on topic, polysaccharides, can be very difficult to digest & you may think hey that's okay, they taste great and whatever doesn't get digested gets pushed out as waste. . . But it doesn't always. Or at least it doesn't leave your intestines as fast as you might think.
Our bodies will go through a lot to digest these foods, and they will sit inside of us, rotting and providing as a food source for bacteria rather than for ourselves. This becomes the source of many digestive issues.
In the womb (I believe) we don't have any bacteria in our guts but the minute that chord is cut and we are drinking milk, that changes. Which is okay, gut bacteria should exist but it needs to exist in balance with each other. When complex sugars sit around
They fuel some bacteria more than others, and our intestinal balance is thrown off.
Many people with Celiac's disease see a lot of relief when they go gluten free. If I recall gluten is a type of protein found in some grains. But for some a gluten free diet doesn't change how they feel on a day to day basis. It may not be the protein they can't tolerate
But actually the bacteria growing in their intestines based off of the complex carbs they ate. I'm not a doctor nothing in this thread or that I tweet is medical advice. I'm just telling you about what I'm reading and hoping someone might see something that
Sounds relatable so they can do their research, talk to their medical team and make some life changes that improves their health. I'm aware many of us don't have medical access so that's not always possible. Be diligent do research, I have faith in you.
