🧵 1. One thing missing from this and related stories (e.g., "£9250 for zoom lectures") is that the same issue ("£9250 for 8 hours contact") was part of the discourse pre-Covid.

This discourse is absent in countries where university education is free. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-54025181
2. We need to keep talking about how universities are (now) funded; what moving away (rather than doing a degree locally while living at home) offers, enables, provides (from the whole social "experience" to escape); whatlt doing a degree is & requires (e.g., independent work).
3. We've evolved so far down the a commodified, marketized, rankings-driven path that we can't see the wood for the trees 🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳

And now, in the pandemic, universities must compete in how much in-person teaching they'll provide... 😢
5. And, of course, that funding - from whatever source - doesn't "just pay for 8 lectures".
