COVID-19 cases (at least one staff) confirmed at 5 Ottawa schools -
This was to be expected.
In recent weeks, we& #39;d see up to 5 school-aged kids/day positive for COVID-19 at CHEO and in assessment centres
Now these kids are, well, going to school https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/sept-7-2020-covid-19-update-1.5714939?__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar">https://www.cbc.ca/news/cana...

FYI - students in multiple boards returned to school last Thursday (my kids included)
In Ottawa, most pediatric cases had symptomatic adult household members as index/initial cases. The kids themselves had mild to no symptoms.

Not news - kids may have detectable (not nec viable) virus for prolonged period, irrespective of symptoms https://ja.ma/2F6hZDq
So,">https://ja.ma/2F6hZDq&q... behaviours to minimize risk of spread among classmates, friends and in families are important (clean hands, face covering, distancing, outdoors)

Schools are opening in Ottawa with resurgent numbers
We SHOULD strive for elimination (avoid Closed spaces w/poor ventilation, Crowded places with ++people gathered, Close contacts within 2m)
but schools defy this logic, w/trade-offs about what& #39;s feasible vs what& #39;s right.

Schools will need to prepare for cases:
- identify symptoms (screen)
- promptly contain case (separate room until parent pick-up)
- PPE available + staff familiar w/technique
- test (?mobile option)
- enhanced cleaning
- contact tracing (<24h)
- Notify staff + families (<24h)

It& #39;s not too late to re-imagine the learning space @imgrund, improve ventilation, explore outdoor ed models or face shields @eliowa (pls!)
It takes practice for schools to dvp a prompt response + prevent spread. What about simulations of suspected case mgmt? @AtLobos @_mlangevin

We are all being asked to do extraordinary things, esp kids. We need transparent, 2-way communication to understand + support staff +schools.
Consider:
- Q&A w/PH, boards, learning + health experts
- revise dashboard w/data on schools, age groups (elem/mid/HS) @ottawahealth

Words are important. Great thread @AntibioticDoc on outbreaks + contact tracing
If staff/student cases enter the building (ie not picked up on active screening), there needs to be a timely school-PHU response (respecting privacy) to prevent onward spread https://twitter.com/AntibioticDoc/status/1303327551327096833?s=20">https://twitter.com/Antibioti...
