First Love, written + produced by Suga

A thread to celebrate Yoongi’s beautiful solo 🎹🥀 #4YearsWithFirstLove
Even knowing nothing of the lyrics or Yoongi’s story, you can feel right away through his spirited and passionate delivery that this song is a confession. A love letter, an admission, an embrace of truth. The piano was Yoongi’s first love. But what does that mean for him?
The song has a deep emotional resonance for him, chronicling his journey from discovering a reverential and ecstatic experience with the piano as a child, through briefly abandoning this magic as he grew +
and reconnecting with this love as a teenager, believing in their fated love until the end.

Yoongi shared that he cried while recording First Love the first time.

In the lyrics, Yoongi personifies the piano, demonstrating the companionship and respect he holds for music in his life, as if it’s a true entity he interacts with. Personification makes perfect sense, actually - it’s his muse.
He assigns loyalty, empathy, and devotion to his piano, retrospectively writing conversations with his lifelong friend.
“You were keeping your place wherever I was.”

The piano is a pillar in his life that he can always rely on.

“Without you, I’m nothing.” Music is, quite literally, his reason for being.
Notice how the lines “Don’t let go of my hand forever, Because I won’t let go of you either” have a double vocal layer to create the impact or two voices speaking as one. Music is a spirit in Yoongi, externalized as a best friend, someone who never lets him fall
Yoongi still describes First Love as an emotionally wrenching piece to make that required a little recovery time.
I think it was so intense for him to reflect on the impact music has in his life because he describes creating music as his emotional conduit, whereas he finds it more difficult to express himself otherwise.
He quotes a book called About Grief to describe how he utilizes music to release emotion, heal, and express himself. He feels better after making music 🎹🖤
First Love is not simply Yoongi saying he loves music. Music is like his fated purpose, the thing that will always be there calling him, supporting him, giving to him.

“My beginning and my end, you are the one who’s going to witness it all.”
