Wind event tips: A thread

If winds materialize like @NWSSaltLakeCity and other meteorologists are saying, Weber, Davis and Salt Lake residents could be in for a mess tonight.

Here’s what we leaned from a similar wind event in 2011.

1/
Trampolines can take flight.

In 2011, our staff members driving through Davis County spotted trampolines in trees, wrapped around fences, tossed in streets and into other yards.

Secure/dismantle/bring in ANYTHING the wind can carry (garbage can/etc.) if you want it back.

2/
Trees will fall.

It doesn’t have to be an older tree in order to fall. 100 mph is FAST wind. Falling trees can damage homes and can leave debris that will be flung by successive wind gusts.

Be extra careful if you venture outside.

3/
Power outages

Falling trees and the strong winds can knock out power.

TONIGHT: charge your phones and fill up your gas tanks. Prepare for power outages depending on your unique circumstances (mobility issues or insulin needs).

5/
When to call 911

Please don’t call 911 to report a power outage. Please don’t call 911 to report the wind storm. (Too many people did this in 2011.)

Call 911 to save a life or stop a crime. If a power outage or wind damage is putting you in danger, please call 911.

6/
Neighbors (and strangers) can be friends

In 2011, neighborhoods and volunteers mobilized to chop up downed trees, remove debris, and more. It was amazing.

Be safe. Wear boots, gloves and eye protection.

7/
Watch out for scams

Anytime there is wind damage to homes or roofs, someone will try to take advantage. It’s ok to say no if you feel pressured to hire a certain contractor. Check out this blog post from the office of @GovHerbert in 2011: https://governor.utah.gov/2011/12/05/storm-scams/

We will get through it

Hey, it’s 2020. We have dealt with the pandemic, earthquakes, wildfires and floods.

It will pass. And we’ll take steps to be even more prepared next time.
