I am okay with people writing and directing stories outside of their ethnicity and culture, but with how “authentic” and “realistic” the new film looks/ is marketed, it feels like there should have been a bigger push for representation / actual research. https://twitter.com/alexanderchee/status/1302997428531060738">https://twitter.com/alexander...
Idk everytime I see people saying that people should write or direct stories that they arn’t from, then the original Mulan or almost all the Ghibli films shouldn’t exist and that’s kinda a bad take :/
Idk having someone from your specific community helming a project doesn’t save it from being inherently westernised, I know this from *coughcrazyrichasians* cough
I think if you want real authenticity, you’ll never get it from global films, support local filmmakers instead.
I don& #39;t mind films having to be palatable for western & global audiences, it& #39;s okay to eat the occasional popcorn and studios to make bank over empty calories. But touting your film as authentic/ the truer story of Mulan is just :/
I think with animation and musicals with how fun and emotive the whole narrative is. Everyone knows that the authenticity question is thrown out of the window and TBH, that& #39;s always the better move for most global films and what most of us expect from funny man mouse company.
