Hell *I* came out through writing yaoi fanfic because it was a community that was ok with queer stuff and back in the late 90s/early 2000s that was the ONLY positive queer space I had. My only window into LGBTQ+ stuff was “they die/they’re in the background/they’re a joke.”
Like thank GOD for fandom because without it all my queer representation would’ve been miserable as fuck back then. I didn’t have Steven Universe or She-Ra I had “gay white guy gets bullied, probably dies” or “black gay dude is sassy.”
(I should point out this thread is spot on for some reason my over analyzing brain thinks I made it sound like I don’t agree cuz I said “this take is harmful” but I meant the take the thread is talking about is harmful, not the thread itself)
