In my efforts to raise my daughter to be an educated and well-rounded person, a large part of my effort has been to include as many books as possible from authors who don’t sugarcoat or whitewash history. What have I learned?
That my own education was woefully inadequate. I feel bad for the generations of Americans who have missed and may continue to miss out on so many amazing stories and people.
And by not telling these stories and these people, we lose not only truth of the past but context for today. Truly, I feel as if I have learned more from my daughter’s books than I did growing up!
My latest recommendation: @GwenTheGweat book on Ona Judge. While some don’t like to discuss that our founding fathers owned slaves, it’s the reality and this is an amazing story about one from George Washington.
I won’t spoil it, but at a minimum you should Google the name. One of many stories swept under the rug for so long and when i was growing up, I never knew I should be looking for them and that the history I read wasn’t anywhere near complete.
I shall end my random thread by just encouraging everyone to read more especially from diverse authors. That as much as anything has changed my life.
