I worked a short day today – a catch-up day – a late morning with the kids at the office, followed by a short afternoon on my own.

I returned home about 5pm, later than I said I would.

When I entered the house, no one greeted me.

I walked around until I found everyone gathered in the playroom, all eyes glued to a screening of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

As is tradition, the kids get to see the movie after Mommy has read them the book.

She did this years ago with Son #1, and now we’re tracing Son #2’s path through the world of wizardry.

I stared at them for a moment, enjoying especially how book three in the series was coming alive in S2’s eyes.

In a way, I was looking at a scene of life moving on without me. A comfort washed over me knowing all would be fine if I was no longer here.

I’m not plotting an escape, nor do expect to die soon; I plan to be here for a long time. But plans aren’t always within our control.

I entered the room and joined them for the last thirty minutes of the film, getting quick, quiet high-fives from everyone on the way to my seat.

In the end, Sirius Black puts his hand to Harry’s chest and says, “The ones who love us never really leave us. You can always find them in here.”

Hold your hand to your heart and find those who love you.
