I work at a busy, high acuity community ED and trauma center that operates with single emergency physician coverage for most hours of the day. I literally could not do my job without my amazing PA and NP colleagues.

They crank through lower acuity cases and pick up higher acuity cases when I’m in critical resuscitations.
Most of the time we don’t talk much about clinical care- their knowledge and skills are excellent. I swing by the patient’s room on my own and rarely change plans.

Whenever either of us has a question, we stop and approach it as a team to do the right thing for the patient. There is zero ego involved- just an intrinsic trust that we are doing this for the patient, not our pride.

Our department’s system works great, but it absolutely depends on experienced professionals working together with mutual respect for each other.

There’s been a lot of discussion recently about postgraduate medical training and what it means. No matter where you stand, professionalism and respect are not optional. No one should ever be discouraged from wanting to improve themselves to take better care of patients.

MDs, DOs, PAs, NPs, RNs, techs, environmental services workers, and so many more of us are all working together to do the right thing for our patients. Oh, and we’re all going through some major shit together right now so let’s please be nice to each other.
