Since Zack Snyder’s WATCHMEN is back in the conversation, I’m starting a thread of why I think it’s still the best superhero movie of the last 15 years.
People always say the violence in this film is glorified. I disagree. What it does is show how violence in most superhero movies doesn’t work.

The disconnect between the brutality of individual fights vs. the near bloodless grand scale destruction at the end feels intentional.
Reframing the intertextuality of the book’s references to other comics by referencing other movies is a small but nice little detail.

Snyder’s making a movie about superhero movies the way Moore and Gibbons made a comic about comics.
I’m struggling to think of many performances in this genre that are as commanding as Jeffery Dean Morgan’s work as The Comedian.
The opening credits sequence is still incredibly evocative and striking. That use of “The Times They Are A Changin’” is just perfect.
