Greece 🇬🇷 reports 156 new cases in the last 24 hours.

An increase from yesterday, where 138 cases were reported.

Today’s announcements from the UK government 🇬🇧 show quarantine measures may now be regional.

I’ll be exploring the latest on the islands too!

My thread 👇
At 4:00pm today, UK 🇬🇧 transport secretary Grant Shapps said England would follow the Welsh regional quarantine system, where specific regions/islands of countries would be added to the English quarantine list rather than entire nations *where possible*.

/2
This subsequently led to the addition of 7 Greek 🇬🇷 islands to England’s quarantine list.

The latest list can be found in the tweet linked below 👇

Following today’s cases, the overall 7-day cumulative case rate per 100,000 people is 12.7.

This number continues to decline as cases level-off which is always good to see.

/4
Number of new cases reported on the Greek 🇬🇷 islands today 👇

Lesbos - 5
Crete - 4 (all in Heraklion)
Mykonos - 1
Zante - 0
Chios - 0
Corfu - 0
Kefalonia - 0
Cyclades Islands - 0
Dodecanese Islands - 0

Islands NOT listed here haven’t reported a case in the last 7 days.

/5
And as requested by many of you… here’s the 7-day cumulative case rate per 100,000 people for the islands 👇

Corfu - 1.0
Dodecanese Islands - 1.9
Kefalonia - 5.6
Chios - 8.5
Crete - 9.8
Mykonos - 10.0
Cyclades Islands - 12.3
Lesbos - 23.3
Zante - 34.1

Important to consider that it now seems (at least for Greece… 🇬🇷) that the UK government 🇬🇧 aren’t solely using the 7-day case rate per 100,000 people as a means of determining whether a country should be added to the quarantine list.

/7
For instance, Crete has a 7-day case rate per 100,000 people of 9.8.

This is far below the UK 🇬🇧 “threshold” of 20… yet has been added to the quarantine lists of England and Wales.

/8
The UK government’s 🇬🇧 logic behind this is likely due to what they deem a “high number" of travellers returning from Crete and testing positive for COVID.

Of course, this proves the need for airport testing schemes and reduced isolation periods… but we all know that!

/9
I’ve also had questions regarding potential restrictions to British 🇬🇧 travellers as a result of rising cases here.

As of current, Greece 🇬🇷 has only requested mandatory negative PCR tests for travellers coming from specific countries (next tweet).

/10
Countries where a negative COVID-19 PCR test result is required upon entry to Greece 🇬🇷 👇

🇧🇬 Bulgaria
🇷🇴 Romania
🇦🇪 U.A.E.
🇲🇹 Malta
🇸🇪 Sweden
🇧🇪 Belgium
🇪🇸 Spain
🇦🇱 Albania
🇲🇰 North Macedonia

The Netherlands 🇳🇱 was removed from this list today!

/11
I mentioned this yesterday… but important to note that France 🇫🇷 is not currently on this list despite seeing a rise in cases.

The UK 🇬🇧 should be fine for now, but important to stay up to date with entry requirements from @FCDOtravelGovUK 👇

Overall, Greece 🇬🇷 remains in a better position than other countries.

Despite the pain regional measures are, they are more pragmatic than an entire nation being added to the quarantine list.

I hope we can be logical with our additions - some right now are questionable!

As usual, more tweets to come as the situation develops!

Thanks! 🇬🇷🇬🇧
