Thread (1/14)
On this Labor Day as I watch my wife spend hours planning lessons for online learning, I am going to vent a bit.
I have spent over two decades working in the Title I schools of SUSD trying my best to improve the lives of students and families.
(2/14)
I continued to put in the extra time in running student government, attending meetings as a school liaison, watching events of students and former students alike on weekends and evenings and basically putting my personal/family life second.
(3/14)
I have now continued that journey to try and make a bigger difference by running for the state legislature. Believe me when I say it isn& #39;t all gummy bears and chocolate chip cookies :)
Now in regards to re opening our schools.
(4/14)
I completely understand the inferiority of online learning. Part of my career was leading the district& #39;s online HS. I would coordinate in person events, have the teachers do in person office hours, and make tons of personal contacts
(5/14)
because I knew how difficult the social/emotional component was on our students.
I have copied a recent text message exchange from one of our volunteers. I am not "outing" anyone (heck, not even using any four letter words).
(6/14)
This isn& #39;t about getting back at anyone. But let me just say that if you cast me aside for one of these important seats, you are electing the same folks who have spent a quarter of a century putting our schools in the funding basement.
(7/14)
We have the second largest class sizes in the nation. We have the worst counselor to student ratio. We make school communities go out every year begging for overrides and bonds so that teachers can still be last in the nation in pay
(8/14)
and districts have to choose between fixing a bus or fixing an AC.
And lastly, some four years ago there was another damn school shooting and this one killed a teacher who tried to protect their students. I came home that day and had a long talk with my 9th grade son.
(9/14)
I was working in a behavior program for troubled students and I had to tell my son that I could be the next one. I explained that if I died it had nothing to do with me not loving him enough. I was basically apologizing to him if I perished
(10/14)
while protecting the lives of my kids. How crazy is that? People are out there telling educators and support personnel that they aren& #39;t for their kids. SERIOUSLY????
So, to anyone who thinks the rhetoric around opening schools allows for you to say these hurtful comments
(11/14)
please step back. Remember who we are and why we exist. We love your children and want what is absolutely the best scenario.

Our volunteer response on the subject of school re openings:
"Each district is deciding this important decision based on protocols
(12/14)
school boards determined. The most important part of this issue is they must open when it is safe to do so in order to remain open. It is damaging to kids and families to open them prematurely, only to have to close them soon after."
(13/14)
And the response:
"Well Eric Kurland doesn& #39;t have my vote anymore good luck lol https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤣" title="Lachend auf dem Boden rollen" aria-label="Emoji: Lachend auf dem Boden rollen">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤣" title="Lachend auf dem Boden rollen" aria-label="Emoji: Lachend auf dem Boden rollen"> ill make sure that this text is shared to all of the 15,000 ppl on social media who want a return to learn in person as well
(end)
.... good luck w the election now I know Eric isn& #39;t on the side of our children and doing what is best for them"

To recap, this person will continue to vote for the people dismantling our public schools but she is "on the side of our children"...
