I feel like Labor Day is the perfect day to have a discussion about why we need to stop referring to people in general as “workers.“ We need to be beyond that construction. We need to reject and demolish that construction.

Our humanity is not and cannot be about our labor. https://twitter.com/bhaviklathia/status/1302997412299104256
And I appreciate why “workers“ is clung to, especially in leftist circles, as a way to describe the people who are not in the ownership class. But we need to think about who is not in either group and how our continued use of “workers“ as a broad class label is exclusionary.
We also need to think about what possibilities and futures we erase by continually viewing people only through that labor lens.

It’s time to think much bigger. Labor cannot be our destiny, we already know that it isn’t. We collectively should be acting like we know it.
