also: if your strict religious upbringing left you with no self-worth and tremendous guilt, turns out "working on yourself to become a better person" does not magically fix that! it's a separate whole-ass step!!
moreover: someone (parents etc.) can love you to bits and do their absolute best and still cause decades of trauma for you to untangle and hopefully only pass a little portion down to the next generations
also: if you want to help others and do good in the world, think strategically — your well-being is a prerequisite to all of that. sometimes it involves playing a little capitalism, because that's our reality, sometimes it involves taking time off - don't torture yourself!
I was raised to believe that money is the root of all evil, and there's some merit to that — but extra money also lets me provide food and a bed to others who need saving from their shitty family atm, so there's that too.
anyway: be good to yourselves so you can be good to others.
