One of the roots of the Crackhead Uber problem is that people see Trump as an empty vessel they can use to live out their various resentments
If they are upset about elite hypocrisy they'll say the President is being criticized for saying that the elites 'really think', presenting his vulgarity as a kind of courage rather than something that often goes further than any private vice
if they are upset with some kind of elite or institutional failure they'll argue that the President is a simpleton who is nonetheless right about something and that his outsider status gives him the courage to break the mold.
smart people are particularly prone to this justification but the president will say the exact opposite thing tomorrow, making a mockery out of their "but he is the only one who will tell the truth!" excuse
they have this obsession with "things you just can't say" and hidden knowledge in general, but often they are things that have been said repeatedly and no one has found convincing
there's a very big difference between persecution and indifference, and in particular between being persecuted and not being successful at the policy process.
this aside, though, the thing that the smart people never learn is that the president will never play along. he will tweet 'nike sucks and is un-american' after he gets into a scuffle with nike, and a certain intellectual will then spring to his defense, saying
"this is not to endorse Trump, but Nike really is not worth defending. before we spring to the defense of Nike we should really interrogate --" he is cut off, of course, by Trump next then tweeting something grotesquely racist and inflammatory that derails his train of thought
the President has no interest in allowing the intellectual to use him to shoehorn in some tired analysis that would be considered to be tired even during the late 90s anti-WTO days, the President just likes having a powerful trebuchet to fling shit at people with
the "this is not to endorse Trump" part is like the "yes, but" that you see before someone segues into blaming the kids in the restaurant for being incinerated by a suicide bomber
but the suicide bombing group at least has a "political wing" whose job it is to sit around and carefully smoothe and sanitize things for polite audiences. the Hamas and PIRA political wings were/are populated by talented people who spent a lot on message discipline
there's no point in going to bat for someone that seems to habitually screw over everyone, even his sorta-kinda-maybe defenders

this, like the WWI comments, are going to trigger the usual bit of "he is dumb, stupid, and vulgar, but you have to hand it to him" arguments
