First it was "build an audience."

Today it& #39;s "build a media company."

Easier said than done… so I asked a pro how to do it, and recorded our convo.

@alex is Senior Editor at TechCrunch and former Editor in Chief at Crunchbase News.

Rule #1 for building a media company:

"Everyone knows this is true, but the reason why no one does it is because it& #39;s hard."

@alex had published 7 articles in the 24 hours before I spoke with him.

The entire first year of Crunchbase News was slow. "It was grind."

@alex and crew wrote daily for a "much smaller audience" than anticipated before reaching substantial numbers.

But they didn& #39;t quit.

"Build context and walk people through why something matters."

Not only do stories help connect the dots for readers, but they& #39;re more entertaining, easier to read through, and more likely to be shared.
https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🗞" title="Eingerollte Zeitung" aria-label="Emoji: Eingerollte Zeitung"> Freshness matters. Use news hooks. People read and share stories about what& #39;s happening in the present.

Even if you just want to make a broader point, "hang that on top of something that& #39;s happening that people are searching for, looking for, that they care about now."
https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🎓" title="Doktorhut" aria-label="Emoji: Doktorhut"> Read everything. Learn constantly. Journalists live on Twitter for a reason.

"I& #39;m always trying to talk to people, to listen, to ask probing questions to learn more, so I have more to write about. When news breaks, I have a lot in the back of my head that I can bring up."
https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🥗" title="Grüner Salat" aria-label="Emoji: Grüner Salat"> Mix it up. There& #39;s no single formula that readers won& #39;t get bored of.

Write about a variety of topics, in a variety of formats, and promote through a variety of channels.

Use the quick feedback loops you get from places like Twitter to iterate and double down on what works.
https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🏆" title="Trophäe" aria-label="Emoji: Trophäe"> Quality matters. People want to read good writing.

You& #39;ll get better with practice, so write a lot. You can also hire pro journalists for cheap, and copywriters to catch errors that would turn readers off.

"No good piece of writing you& #39;ve read was ever done by one person."
