As someone who is chronically ill that lives with chronic pain from a number of incurable, progressive diseases, I get overwhelmed and actually kinda more depressed by a lot of suicide prevention posts, and I want to talk about why.

A lot of posts are from people who attempted suicide, saying that “things will get better.” Which is great that people feel that way! But I doubt if I’m alone in feeling like that’s not a guarantee someone can provide with chronic illness.

I understand that life situations can get better outside of my health, but honestly? My health is so bad that it overtakes every other aspect of my life, and I have very few options, if any, that promise me much improvement.

If there’s anything in life that I’m guaranteed, it’s worsening health. So sometimes it has a negative effect on me when that’s what suicide prevention campaigns have to offer. I feel like they don’t see me.

I just feel like there isn’t a lot of space for talking about feelings of suicidality in people with chronic illnesses and/or disabilities.

It can actually be dangerous to admit to feeling suicidal to your doctors when you’re chronically ill, because they’ll often attribute your physical symptoms to your mental state and ignore issues of other origins.

And it saddens me that we don’t have a way to talk about this more because I’m absolutely sure a lot of us with chronic illnesses have felt suicidal more than we’ve admitted, and that lives have been lost because of the lack of attention.
