a thread homosexual themes in karan johar movies
Kal Ho Na Ho (2003)
oh man wtf do i say about this one. In this very beautiful comedy (?) skit which is repeated several times in the movie, kantaben the house help is shown to be shockd and disgusted everytime she catches them being ‘gay’. ppl still laff at this skit apparently
absolutely disgusting representation of gay themes in indian cinema if you ask me. the jokes are not even funny what are we laughing about ? ignorance ? downright homophobia ? theres also a scene where kanta ben asks shahrukhs’s character to stay away from her precious rohit baba
Dostana (2008)
The entire premise of the movie is 2 straight guys pretending to be gay so they can creep up on the hot girl roommate 😀👍🏽
Kirron Kher’s character at the end accepts her son for being gay and is shown to be happy for him in the end so thats cool ig but the whole…
movie handles things in a very half assed ignorant way to get some cheap laughs and it really rubs me off in a bad way. Its a gay movie for straight people to laugh down upon them.

(maa da ladla still cracks me up sometimes though and i hate myself for that)
Student Of the Year (2012)
If the stereotypes, negative portrayals and ignorance in all the previous mentioned movies didnt get you, let me show you gay principal of the school who is flamboyant & effeminate (obviously) is always thirsting after the lead male actors (ofcourse)
and is shown to be borderline predatory towards their good looking sports teacher (triple bingo)
i havent seen SOTY 2 because of course why would i but i hope they didnt repeat this character and if they did…….sigh
Bombay Talkies (2013)
Bombay talkies was a portmanteau film & Karan Johar had a short film in it. The story was about two men trapped in an orthodox society that hates them. Story of an openly gay men encounters a closeted gay men in a heterosexual marriage handled sensitively ??
i am not gonna lie to you Karan Johar really surprised me with this one.
Kapoor and Sons (2016) produced by Karan
Ok i am going to be honest, i havent seen this one (i fucking would have but no one told me Fawad was gay in this like? i so would have seen this if i knew)
eventhough i havent seen it, two very good friends of mine who happen to be queer,
tell me that the film tackles coming out, tension between parents and the struggle involved in accepting yourself really well so i guess Karan does fine in this one. This thread is not a call out against KJ or anything who am i to judge him, he has been in the public spotlight
for so many years and has faced blatant homophobia every day of his life to the point where he even said once that i dont come out because i dont want FIRs against me. It was just interesting to me to note the gradual shift in tones of homosexuality in his work over the years.
I do have anger towards him with the aspect that he never worked on good storylines for queer people or weilded the immense power over pop culture he had to do good by the community. All his gay characters were stereotypes and tropes repeated over and over again.
With the decades of influence he had and still has over bollwood, all he ever did along with Ekta Kapoor was to solidify traditional regressive conservative family and gender roles and kept solidifying them for another generation, robbing us of valuable progress.
And i dont agree with a oh it was a long time ago too excuse because SOTY was fucking 2013 and Fire by Deepa Mehta was 1996

Anyways if you still want an indian queer celeb to stan, here’s Dutee Chand being cute and shit
feel free to add anymore instances if you remember i dont watch movies that much hehe
let me just plug rios edit in case this gets likes
