TW: Violence against indigenous women
I haven’t been watching @LovecraftHBO since I knew I would want to binge watch it but i’ve heard about this past episode where a 2S (obviously indigenous trans woman/femme) was introduced to the show as a monster and is immediately killed?

“In Disclosure, the documentarians are talking about trans characters — how for so long trans characters in film and television were met with horror or disgust or humor at the expense of their dignity, how that taught people in the real world to react in the same ways.. 1/?
.. It’s fucked up, plain and simple. And while Yahima’s Two-Spirit identity complicates Disclosure’s framework, what happens to Yahima fits this trope — they’re introduced and killed shortly thereafter. It fits into a history of violence .. 2/3
.. And a show engaging with the violence of white supremacy should not be doing something like this.. But it’s extra painful to have an avoidable misstep like this in a show full of Black characters that’s made by Black creators and I can’t see this arc as anything else: a flaw.”
quotes from an article from the @vulture titled Lovecraft County Recap: Disappointment Above, Disappointment Below https://www.vulture.com/article/lovecraft-country-episode-4-season-1-recap-a-history-of-violence.html">https://www.vulture.com/article/l...
I want to think that the creators of this show are highlighting how violence against indigenous women and 2S peoples/trans women/femmes is a terrifying reality then and now and that these violences are a symptom of white supremacy that can be enacted by any race..
.. that is being manipulated by colonial worldview and white supremacy. There’s a kind of responsibility taken when acknowledging that these horrific acts are not only done by white people but by Black, Indigenous and People of colour who are taught these “realities” of gender..
and sexuality. It’s horrifying to see an indigenous trans woman/femme being murdered, sexualized and being a conduit for disgust and confusion, that’s all true. I also want to believe that there was a point to this violence but we won’t really know until the rest of the season..
airs. Again, I haven’t watched it yet but i’ve read the synopsis. I don’t know if I would go forward with watching this show unless this arc is acknowledged in the coming episodes - and would advise indigenous women & trans/2S to avoid it as well with a huge TW
I’m thinking a lot about writing horror with trans and Indigenous characters and depicting the terrors of reality feels like one of the only respectful ways to do that, which unfortunately is violence that is both internal and external and as someone who is existing in both these
realities, I don’t know if I would have done it right either.
I’m thinking about the legacy of horror creation and like I get why this happened, and I think some things could have been changed, but just the acknowledgement of the terrors of existing as an Indigenous 2S woman..

is more representation than what is currently happening in Indian country and maybe that’s the issue needing to be acknowledge here. How can we expect people outside of our cultures to understand our most vulnerable when we don’t want to do the work ourselves to acknowledge their
existence?
I’m unsure how I feel obviously. It’s triggering in a way I want horror to be, I want to be left feeling horrified and they knew this was going to be horrific to the audience they are aiming for, which I want to believe is socially aware people of colour

Also this is just my thought process as an indigenous trans woman/2S person who has absorbed themselves with horror media their entire life, This is not me accepting this arc as okay, but me trying to understand and process it.
I don’t speak for all 2S people obviously.

Okay now that I watched it, it all feels so ??? why did he punch her when she started screaming? her kill was quick and felt like it’s going to be explained more so it doesn’t feel like this is the end of that plot line but like i feel more yikes about it after watching.
How she was interacting with things like the carrot in the scene was like humanizing of the character, who doesn’t need to be humanized, and idk how I feel! I wanna hear from Black and Indigenous femmes, trans folks and women about it because I’m like
